Vuoom the subscription

See it on the home page

Vuoom is a free screen recorder for Windows. You record, the camera glides to where you point, and you export a small GIF or MP4. There is no account, no watermark and no subscription.

A flat recording of a whole screen makes the text tiny and the moment that matters easy to miss. The recorders that fix this by zooming into each click are Mac-only, paid, or both.

How it works

The Vuoom editor: a recording above its timeline of zoom blocks
  • Capture uses Windows Graphics Capture: a region, a whole display or a single window, at 24, 30 or 60 fps.

  • Press Ctrl+Shift+Z while recording and the camera glides into the cursor. Press it again to pull back. The motion is a critically damped spring, never a hard cut.

  • In the editor, auto zooms can be planned again from your clicks at any strength. Each zoom can follow the cursor or lock to a point.

  • The timeline handles trims, cuts, speed-ups and skimming idle stretches, with undo across everything.

  • Narration and system sound record as separate tracks. Captions are made offline with whisper.cpp.

  • Export is an optimized GIF, or H.264 MP4 at up to 60 fps, encoded on the GPU when one is available.

A recording Vuoom exported. The zooms are its own; nobody keyframed them.

How it is built

The interface is SolidJS inside Tauri 2. Capture, compositing and encoding run natively in Rust. The compositor is wgpu, and the same render path drives the preview and the export, so what you preview is what ships.

While you record, frames stream to disk as LZ4-compressed XOR deltas with periodic keyframes. The README says that is typically more than 20 times smaller than raw pixels. Clip length is bounded by the drive, not by RAM, and a crash does not lose the take.

GitHub Actions builds and publishes a release on every push to main. There have been 44 since June 2026.

Vuoom is open source, Apache 2.0 licensed, and runs on Windows 10 and 11.
